What this site does
bloodmoontonight.com shows lunar eclipse information — status, timing, visibility, and weather outlook — for your location. This policy explains what data is involved and where it goes.
Location data
Location features are optional and used only to compute eclipse visibility, Moon times, and weather for your area:
- Browser geolocation (GPS) is used only if you tap "Check My Location" and approve your browser's permission prompt. Your coordinates are processed in your browser and are not stored by us.
- Approximate location from your IP address may be looked up via ipapi.co so the page can show sensible defaults without a permission prompt.
- City search and reverse geocoding send the city name or coordinates you choose to Open-Meteo and BigDataCloud to resolve place names.
- Weather lookups send your coordinates to Open-Meteo to fetch the cloud-cover forecast.
We do not save your location on our servers or associate it with you.
Email alerts
If you sign up for eclipse alerts, we store your email address in our database for one purpose: sending you notifications about upcoming lunar eclipses and related viewing information. We do not sell or share the list, and every email will include a way to unsubscribe. To be removed at any time, use the unsubscribe link in any alert email or contact us.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand aggregate site usage (pages viewed, approximate region, device type). Google Analytics sets cookies and receives standard request data such as your IP address. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by blocking analytics cookies.
Embedded content and third-party services
- YouTube — the live-stream player loads from youtube-nocookie.com only after you click it; YouTube's privacy policy applies while you watch.
- CesiumJS and SunCalc — the interactive globe and astronomy libraries load from their content delivery networks (cesium.com, jsdelivr.net), which receive standard request data such as your IP address when the files are fetched.
Cookies
The site itself does not set cookies for its own features. Cookies present on the site come from Google Analytics as described above.
Data retention and your rights
Email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe or ask for deletion. Depending on where you live (e.g., GDPR in the EU, CCPA in California), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data we hold about you — for us, that is only your email address if you subscribed. Contact us to exercise these rights.
Children
The site is a general-audience astronomy resource and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with an updated date.
